The incongruous Danish duo of Jesper Mortensen (“Junior”) and Jeppe Laursen (“Senior”) is bringing some fun back to music. Their debut album, D-D-Don’t Don’t Stop the Beat, is a boisterous testament to their humorous attitude. Clocking in at a half-hour, it manages to encompass the energy and abandon of a street carnival in an intense, punchy package.
Playful and not taking themselves the least bit seriously, Junior Senior will have you unavoidably and exuberantly singing along to stupidly simplistic refrains such as “We’ve got a rock, rock, rock, that’s rockin’ the house” on “Rhythm Bandits,” which also incorporates the swirling loops of a Chemical Brothers-style riff. “Move Your Feet” will have you clapping in time for all you’re worth, its danceable Miami Sound Machine-esque synthesizers working you into a frenzy. Junior Senior also offers dry garage-rock shouts that give way to symphonic, epic strings on “Chicks and Dicks.” “Shake Me Baby” has the crunch of a classic T. Rex tune, and the ironic “Dynamite” could have been a part of the Partridge Family’s repertoire if it weren’t so trashy.
Junior Senior is not ashamed to be as poppy as it wants to be, especially when its confections are rolled in a punky New Wave coating. Just don’t overdo it with too many listens. Indulging on occasion is best for freshness, or for an aural reprieve when other artists are outdoing themselves with seriousness.
