Told through contemporary dance, song, and Afro-Peruvian folklore, Alma en Boca weaves a complex tale of artistic expression, social structure, and indigenous traditions cultivated from the percussive beats of the cajón. The evolution of the Afro-Peruvian culture, with its many musical genres, comes alive through a cast of 20 performers, including dancers and singers. Award-winning choreographer Marcela Diaz directs a project that has taken six years, including three years of intense research, to pull together. Africans taken to Peru were mostly from Angola and the Congo, and they brought with them an array of traditions, languages, and religions borne from Spanish and Brazilian descendants. From this eclectic mix arose the Afro-Peruvian culture, and its multifaceted story is celebrated and told through its own music and art.
