The University of Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball team began the 2011-12 season by plowing through teams such as Virginia Commonwealth and Holy Cross during the holiday tournament, with 2011 ACC Player of the Year Shenise Johnson winning tournament MVP and forward Morgan Stroman beating opponents into submission. So far, so good. The 12th-ranked Lady Canes have the talent and potential to do some damage in the NCAA tournament, but they know that beating down unranked teams won’t be enough. To make some serious noise, they’ll have to be giant killers. The road has been bumpy, as the ladies have fallen to ranked teams such as Tennessee, Georgetown, and ACC rival North Carolina in recent weeks. So Thursday they look to hunker down and stop that nonsense by putting their 32 home-win streak on the line as they face high-scoring Laurin Mincy and the unbeaten, fifth-ranked Maryland Terrapins at the BankUnited Center.
