Divine. RuPaul. Lady Bunny. The fiercely costumed stars of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Drag queens have come a long way, baby! Strut along Washington Avenue or Ocean Drive any given weekend and you might encounter one of our equally fabulous local figures, like Daisy Deadpetals, Elaine Lancaster, Shelley Novak, or the ever-popular Adora. Stiletto-heeled, bewigged, ornately painted drag culture helps make South Beach so eminently photogenic. For Gay Pride Month, ArtCenter/South Florida will pay homage to the most extroverted, colorful, and distinctive icons of gay society with a free exhibition titled “Queens and Kings.”
“Drag is such a big part of the gay community, and nobody ever seriously looks at them as stars. And they really are! They’re the biggest voices in the gay community, and it’s time to celebrate them,” says exhibitions director Claire Breukel.
