Remember Honey, I Shrunk the Kids? It’s the movie that made every child of the ’80s fantasize about being an unwitting science experiment — even if it meant having a father like zany scientist Wayne Szalinski — so they could camp out in discarded Lego blocks and battle vicious scorpions. Responsible grownups have since abandoned those dreams. Well, most of them have, anyway. Artist Will Ryman still lives in the land of the little, creating oversize sculptures of things that aren’t very large in real life. In 2009, he made an enormous sculpture of a man lying in a bed surrounded by kicked beer cans and half-eaten Doritos for the Saatchi Gallery in London. And he has spent the past year installing giant roses, complete with menacing insects and thorns, along the streets of New York City and Washington, D.C. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden hosts Ryman’s rose collection through May 31, giving the place a trippy Alice in Wonderland vibe.
