A few years ago, local guitarist Steve Vaynshtok began hearing squalls of instrumental noise crashing off the inside walls of his skull. So he started a two-man band called Fight Like Animals. “It’s music I want to listen to,” Vaynshtok says, “but no one is making.”
Originally he teamed with fellow Ukrainian axe man Vlad Rychko. But that partnership didn’t last long. “He quit in November of 2009,” Vaynshtok explains, “due to creative differences.” And eventually Brett Flaherty was recruited as a replacement, helping to finish Fight Like Animals’ debut EP, In the Company of Monsters.
“We wrote and recorded it in, like, five months. But then when we looked back on it, everything about all the songs sucked,” Vaynshtok admits. “So after my bandmate quit, Brett, who was the producer at the time, remade the beats and we redid my parts with a way better guitar. We rewrote and re-recorded it over last summer. And then he spent the next five months mixing and mastering.
“So, yeah, it took two years to get this EP done,” he laughs. “But that’s just because of the fuckery attached to it.”
