You might think you know mangoes. After all, Miamians spend the summer picking them off their trees by the dozens and finding ways to add them to everything we eat. But with more than 1,000 varieties of this fleshy fruit growing worldwide, there’s a helluva lot you haven’t seen.
At Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (10901 Old Cutler Rd., Coral Gables), you can learn everything about this fascinating crop at the annual International Mango Festival this weekend. From the Mangos of the World Display to the Mango Tasting Room to the Curator’s Choice mango tree sale — you’re in for a mango-induced sensory overload.
Vote on your favorite variety, score mango-based snacks from onsite food trucks, watch the Viva Mango documentary, and learn about cultivation from the Mango Medics. It’s all mango all the time. Best of all, there’s a Sunday brunch featuring eats from some of Miami’s hottest restaurants — Oak Tavern, Eating House, and Blue Collar, to name a few. Mango, of course, is the main attraction.
After a day or two of this, your mango expertise will be unsurpassed.
The festival takes place Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free for members and children 5 and under, $25 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 and up, and $12 for children 6-17. Discounts available for anyone who walks, bikes, or takes public transportation to the festival. Brunch tickets run $100 for members, $125 for non-members.
