Easily one of the most multitasking players in the contemporary jazz field, Joseph “Jowee” Omicil returns to South Florida, this time to delight art patrons at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami.
Multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, producer, and educator, it’s easy to lose focus that he is primarily one of the more progressive sax men currently working.
His last album Roots & Grooves has garnered praise from both jazz and pop camps, demonstrating his abundant crossover appeal.
Born in Montreal, Quebec of Haitian stock, comparisons to greats like Rollins and Davis are plenty. Meanwhile, his smoothness does not downplay the smooth quality of his jazz. His style isn’t some kind of ready-made radio format. His work is downright soothing. And it blends East and West while never loosing an eye on the Caribbean chill that runs in his DNA.
