City of Miami Police officer Jose Maldonado-Dick might have misunderstood the “protect and serve” part of his job description, because he’s been arrested for offering to protect and serve drug traffickers.
A seven-year veteran of the force, Maldonado-Dick approached a drug dealer back in July and offered his protection.
He now faces charges of two counts of armed cocaine trafficking, two counts of unlawful compensation, and two counts of unlawful use of a communication device. He was arrested and is being held without bond.
Police chief Manuel Orosa and Miami-Dade County state attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle held a joint press conference this afternoon to announce the arrest.

The Miami Fraternal Order of Police issued the following statement from President Javier Ortiz.
If the charges are true against Officer Maldonado[-Dick], we support that he is held accountable for his actions. However, we also believe that all individuals accused of a crime are innocent until proven guilty. We ask for the community to keep our police force in your prayers while this case is processed through the criminal justice system.
