George Zimmerman has been found not guilty in the shooting death of Miami Gardens teenager Trayvon Martin. After sixteen hours of deliberation, including 12 today, the six-person, all-female, all-white jury delivered the unanimous decision at 10 p.m. tonight. Apparently the jury could not remove all reasonable doubt that Zimmerman was not acting in self defense.
George Zimmerman’s GPS monitoring ankle device will be removed, and he will be allowed to leave court tonight as a free man.
Zimmerman, a 28-year-old self-appointed neighborhood watchman for a gated community in Sanford, Florida. Trayvon Martin, 17, was staying in the community while visiting his father and father’s girlfriend.
He had walked to a nearby 7-Eleven to get a can of Arizona Iced Tea and Skittles. He was walking back to his father’s girlfriend’s home when Zimmerman started following him. The two got into some sort of confrontation and we may never know what happened that night, but Martin ended up dead.
