The City of Miami started recruiting new police officers this week. According to a press release on the city’s website, “those hired will be able to reap the rewards of a great career in law enforcement under a recently ratified labor agreement, which will offer a starting annual salary of $44,592 plus $2,000 Crime Prevention Pay as of October 1, 2007.”

No mention of a free Lexus, however. Oh, sorry. That perk is reserved for Chief John Timoney, who, according to the Miami Herald’s editorial writers, “set a good example” by buying the SUV after lying about it to local media. Whatever. His rank-and-file will surely “set a good example” on Sept. 4 when the police union votes whether to declare a lack of confidence in Timoney’s leadership. -Tamara Lush
