While it’s nice that Starbucks offers soy milk as an alternative to cow juice, non-dairy drinkers have been clamoring for more. The My Starbucks Idea site (designed so Starbucks fanatics can beg the corporate behemoth for stuff) has long been buzzing with requests for new alternatives.
Looks like Starbucks has been listening. While they’ve been quietly testing coconut milk in Cleveland and Portland markets, a barista tipster says they’re about to release it everywhere else.

Today, as I ordered my usual soy beverage, the barista told me coconut milk is officially on its way. It’s already in the computer, the barista revealed, also mentioning that they chose coconut over almond (or other alternatives) because of potential allergy issues.

Excited, I emailed Starbucks media relations for confirmation. They sent the following (cryptic) reply:
Starbucks is aware that many of our customers prefer their favorite beverages to be prepared with non-dairy milk and soy alternatives. Starbucks is currently testing coconut milk approximately 400 stores in Cleveland and Oregon for a limited time. We’re looking forward to learning more, but do not have additional information to share on future availability of non-dairy milk and soy alternatives within our stores nationally.
Nonetheless, if it’s in the almighty computer, that’s a pretty good bet it’s about to hit stores. Coconut milk mocha, anyone?
