There’s been a lot of interesting rumors about the job prospects of various former University of MIami head coaches this week, but man, oh man, this one just hurts.
Randy Shannon is rumored to be in contention to become the next defensive coordinator for the Florida State Seminoles, and nothing is Holy.
Current FSU DC Mark Stoops is almost out the door. He’s taking over head coaching duties at Kentucky, and ‘Noles coach Jimbo Fisher is on the hunt for a replacement.
Shannon meanwhile just started his first coaching job this season since getting fired at Miami two years ago. He’s currently coaching linebackers at TCU.

So, according to The Palm Beach Post, Shannon could end up in Tallahassee. The report indicates no actual sources, so don’t get too worried. Yet, anyway.
Shannon may have been a mediocre head coach in Miami, but few people have as much history with the program as Shannon. As a player, he was a starter on the ’87 national championship team. After a short stint as a player for the Cowboys, Shannon returned to the program as a graduate assistant and worked his way up the coaching ranks. He spent a couple seasons on staff with the Dolphins, but returned in 2001 to become the ‘Canes DC. His defense ranked in the top ten in the nation for five of his six season in the position.
‘Canes fans hold no great ill will toward the man. So, seeing him on the sidelines of the team’s biggest rival would have to hurt. Nevermind the fact that the ‘Noles would be getting an excellent DC. The fact he’s a proven recruiter who knows how to mine high school talent in South Florida is almost too much to think about right now.
