Shortly after Charlie Crist announced he’d be running for governor as a Democrat on Monday, word came that he’d be doing his first big cable news interview as a candidate on MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews.
Crist was likely hoping this would be a chance to raise his national profile among MSNBC’s left-leaning audience. Matthews was mostly interested in bashing Republicans for hating Obama. What resulted was an awkward exchange that barely registered as an actual interview in which Crist was only allowed to talk for roughly 130 seconds.
Crist had to struggle to get word of his campaign platform in. That platform basically being “I am not Rick Scott,” but Matthews wasn’t really interested in hearing it. He kept pushing forward with his one obsession with how Republicans hate Obama.

Oddly, the entire segment was framed not around Crist’s campaign announcement, but rather the fact that Chris Christie had won reelection in New Jersey. It’s probably not a good idea to agree to go on a show if you are running for governor, but will be required to talk about the reelection of a guy who is running for, um, governor in another state.
