“There is a place. Like no place on Earth. A land full of wonder, mystery, and danger! Some say to survive it: You need to be as mad as a hatter.” If we didn’t know better, we’d swear the Mad Hatter’s ramblings were inspired by the state of Florida. Either way, the magic of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland comes alive once again for the annual Mad Hatter Arts Festival. Celebrating its ninth year, the two-day fest brings exhibiting artists to the grounds of the Barnacle Historic State Park and the sidewalks of Main Highway in Coconut Grove. The juried event includes artists working in all types of media, live music, a participatory drum circle, food, hat contests, and activities for kids of all ages. This year features a cello-graff portion, in which temporary invisible walls made from plastic-wrapped canvases are placed in designated areas throughout the Grove, giving artists the opportunity to paint graffiti-style work. Visitors also can take historic tours through the home of Commodore Ralph Munroe, one of the original founders of Coconut Grove, on the grounds of the Barnacle. The home was built in 1891 and is the oldest house in its original location in Miami-Dade County.
