If the 1980 movie musical (and subsequent television series and Broadway play) Fame took place in Miami, the setting would definitely be the New World School of the Arts. For twenty years the esteemed institute has been turning out successful alumni in all aspects of the performing arts. We’d like to imagine that the scene at today’s New World School of the Arts Beach Bash will wind up like an outtake from Fame, where all the students suddenly burst into song and begin a perfectly choreographed dance routine along the sand at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne. That probably won’t happen, but today at noon there will be barbecue, a DJ pumping out the latest hits, and a happy crowd of talented students and alumni enjoying outdoor fun on the popular family beach. Former students and well-wishers should slip on their flip-flops and meet some of Miami’s most artistic people. Admission is free.
