Phil Spector was a dabbler. He dabbled in little things such as legendary pop music production (his credits include the Beatles’ final album, Let It Be, and the Top Gun ballad “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ ”), mad scientist hairstyling, and murder. Oh, how he loved murder. And as an American music pioneer turned homicide enthusiast, it’s only natural a documentary be made of his fame and subsequent downward spiral.
Director Vikram Jayanti’s ego-driven portrait, The Agony and Ecstasy of Phil Spector, explores the music man’s genius, his thoughts about John Lennon’s role in saving the film careers of Scorsese and De Niro, and his part in the murder of actress Lana Clarkson. Spector’s insanity is brilliantly showcased in this 100-minute exposé, which features murder trial footage played to music produced by the man himself. Plus the dude has more daddy issues than Parenting magazine, and he sports a do that makes Gaga’s choices look conservative.
