The Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami has been one of the leaders of South Florida’s cultural scene, earning an IMLS National Medal for Museum and Library Service earlier this year. The woman credited with the museum’s meteoric rise is Bonnie Clearwater, who served as MOCA’s executive director and chief curator.
Now, the Miami Herald reports, Clearwater is leaving MOCA to run the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale.
In Fort Lauderdale, Clearwater will work to define “[the museum’s] purpose, its vision and taking it to beyond not even the next level but the next level beyond that,” she told the paper.
Clearwater had been at MOCA since 1993. Recently, she helped to bring wunderkind curator Alex Gartenfeld to the museum staff, as well as a highly anticipated Tracy Emin exhibit due in December. (Clearwater will still curate that exhibit, though her start date at the MOAFL is September 3.)

“I feel very confident in [MOCA’s] future,” she told the Herald. “It’s really [because of] the fact that there is such a strong and educated board and a creative, smart, resourceful staff that I feel confident that this is a good time for me to take this opportunity.”
