In South Beach’s fabulous Nineties heyday, the drag queens became the city’s unofficial mascots, representing long-legged glamour and over-the-top decadence. Now that SoBe has become more like an open-air shopping mall and less a venue for quirky boutiques and late-night clubs, dragtastic glitz seems to be mostly relegated to sponsored fundraisers and gay clubs. Edison Farrow’s Showgirls Cabaret at Funkshion Lounge promises to restore the glamour to SoBe’s most popular pedestrian stretch. “We’re going to have three huge drag queens out front early, attracting attention. Then we’re going to do shows by the window and cause a scene out there,” says Farrow. So what kind of food goes with drag? Farrow laughs at the question. “Anything fabulous,” he demurs. Funkshion’s menu certainly fits that bill. Begin with a succulent Mediterranean fig salad sprinkled with smoked Gouda and caramelized pistachios; then dive into KaasDoop fondue, which blends Holland’s finest cheeses with Hennessy and nutmeg. Feast your eyes on cabaret-style musical performances by some of the Beach’s most striking queens, including Ebonee Excell, Chyna, and Johanna James as the ever-iconic Barbra.
