The Steadfast Tin Soldier is one of those Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales that breaks your heart while offering hope. First published in 1838, it tells of a one-legged tin soldier who falls from a window and is reunited with his paper princess love under dire circumstances. In this era of Pixar animation, the story is an unusual choice for a production, but The PlayGround Theatre isn’t your everyday children’s theater company. “We asked the director of the play, Vyatcheslav Dolgachev, to direct a show for ages three to eight. It’s a Soviet play that he adapted, and it’s a gift to children. They don’t get to see rich costumes and traditional storytelling anymore. Both children and adults love it, it’s so beautiful,” gushes Stephanie Ansin, the theater’s co-artistic director. Dolgachev is an accomplished director with an impressive list of Russian theater awards under his belt. The play opens this morning at 11:00 at the Shores Performing Arts Theater. Tickets cost $15.
