In a culture where unconventional families have become utterly conventional, The Other Woman inspects the idiosyncrasies and repercussions of one modern, improvised union. Natalie Portman plays Emelia, a recent Harvard Law graduate who falls in love with and soon marries her boss Jack (Scott Cohen), an already-married father of one. Jilted, jealous, and bitter ex-wife Carolyn (Lisa Kudrow) tries to get her bearings while Emelia’s relationship with her new stepson William (Charlie Tahan) is strained at best. The loss of a newborn daughter adds a new dimension of pain, which tests the new marriage and brings even more resentment between Emelia and William. Emelia struggles to cope with her grief, and in the process, is forced to mature as a wife and a stepmother. Meanwhile, Carolyn must come to grips with the reality of the family’s new state, where she must unwillingly share her matronly role. Read the review on page 8pm. The film screens at Coral Gables Art Cinema this Tuesday at XX p.m. and runs through March 3.
