Here in Miami, where pastel-color buildings are our birthright, we tend to think of Art Deco architecture as an inimitably local thing. At the 30th annual Art Deco Weekend, event organizers will be celebrating distinctive art and architecture in an opposite corner of the world. This year’s theme is East Meets West: Art Deco from Shanghai to Miami, and visitors to the three-day fiesta will enjoy a distinctively Asian flavor. Event highlights include free live concerts, a classic car fest, and the “Arf Deco” dog promenade. A free classic film series will juxtapose stereotypical depictions of the style in Orson Wells’s The Lady from Shanghai against contemporary presentations in Zhang Yimou’s Shanghai Triad and female director Xiaolian Peng’s Shanghai Rumba. Tonight’s evening parade begins at 7:30 and will feature ornate floats and Chinese dragon dancers wending along Ocean Drive between Fifth and Fifteenth streets.
