The company’s name is a hybrid, with the original Maximum Dance still there, but the accent is definitely on the current artistic director’s work. The ever evolving Ballet Gamonet Maximum Dance returns to the Gusman Center with a trio of dances choreographed by Jimmy Gamonet De Los Heros — a colorful sampling of this interesting dancemaker’s vibrant take on bringing ballet to life in the new century. His Tango Tonto promises a touch of irony alongside all the aggressive physicality of that sultriest of dance rhythms, set to music by Ernesto Nazareth. Choreographed to a John Adams score that makes clear the sensual nature of the musical process, Gamonet’s Miniatures follows the composer’s impulse to minimize and condense in a visualization of the music that brings onstage the sexy syncopations at the heart of movement. The baroque explosions of Partita, a sprawling party for 24 dancers in nine movements, closes the evening with a touch of humor as the choreographer explores the seemingly endless possibilities of bodies coming together again and again. Presented tonight and Saturday, January 28, at 8:00 at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts.
