To the untrained eye, popular Miami DJ Lance-O’s sun-bleached dreadlocks and ready smile give the impression of an easy-going dude. But his hard work and determination are evident in the Dirty South Surf Contest, an improbable event that has brought crowds to Miami Beach for the past three years. Eager sex-waxers shouldn’t race out to the water with their boards just yet. “We wait until there’s waves. Last year we didn’t have the contest until February 27. People didn’t think you could have a surf contest in Miami, but I’ve turned them into believers,” the shaggy DJ laughs. The contest’s window opens with a welcoming party tonight at 10:00 at the Boom Boom Room, featuring live music by the Drive Home and Fitzroy, giveaways, and a ginormous surfboard raffle. Land-lubbers can catch Lance-O hosting his regular free Reggae Sunday at Jazid, 1342 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. Call 305-534-6110, or register online at www.kulchasurf.com.
