Actor Paul Tei, whom you might know as Barry the money launderer on Burn Notice, founded the Mad Cat Theatre Company 11 years ago to produce original, off-the-wall plays. You can always count on Mad Cat to extract the marrow from any subject, poke it, prod it, and make you laugh your ass off while doing so. So what’s the zany theater troupe up to this time? A death in the family, of course, with Tei’s latest unhinged comical creation, So My Grandmother Died, Blah, Blah, Blah, which debuts Friday at the Light Box at Goldman Warehouse.
The play follows Polly Chekhov, a comedy writer living in Hollywood, California, who flies home to Hollywood, Florida, for her grandmother’s funeral. She gets a nasty case of writer’s block when it comes time to pen the eulogy. This becomes the kick-starter to a brouhaha among Polly and her two older sisters, all while dear ol’ grandma lies in state. Mad Cat describes the plot as “a syncopated exposition of three sisters.” We’re not entirely sure what that means, but when Mad Cat is involved, subversive, outrageous hilarity will definitely ensue.
