January is the perfect month for the ING Miami Marathon. After all, it’s practically the only month suitable for any kind of strenuous outdoor activity. Following the holiday hubbub, the city’s streets are once again becoming safe from snowbirds, and comfortable temperatures waft along on pleasantly surprising gusts of … what is that, breeze? Ah yes, it’s the kind of climate that calls for outdoor fun. The runners are registered and ready to take off from the American Airlines Arena, and along the route there’ll be no shortage of beautiful sights. Besides sweaty, fit hotties in tiny shorts, participants can enjoy the views as they hoof it across the MacArthur Causeway to South Beach, along the Venetian Causeway back to the mainland, and through downtown, Brickell, Coconut Grove, and finally back to Bayfront Park.
But what if you’re not exactly the running type? There are locations all over the city where you can plant yourself and watch. The cheering zone at the Omni Center at NE 15th Street and Biscayne Boulevard is a good place to start. There’ll also be crowds at the TotalHealth and Fitness Expo at the Miami Beach Convention Center (1901 Convention Center Dr., Miami Beach). And at the Trinidad and Tobago High Commission (1101 Brickell Ave., Miami), there’ll be the first Trinidad and Tobago Village, featuring steel pan music, real Trini food, and live entertainment featuring local celebrity Papa Keith from 9 to 11:30 a.m. What, did you expect marathon fun to continue past noon? Not with that sun, buddy. Race start time is 6:15 a.m.
