Landscapes have been a part of the artistic repertoire since the days when primitive men used iron oxide to decorate their caves. Capturing the essence of the environment around us isn’t a skill to be sneezed at. Bob Ross might make it look insanely easy, but making a mountainside fir look truly “happy” is a skill that takes talent and patience. Watch the experts get their stroke on at an outdoor painting event today at Pinecrest Gardens (11000 Red Rd., Pinecrest). While you watch 30 artists lovingly touch brush to canvas, the little ones can enjoy an arts and crafts area and do some creating of their own. The event takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Call 305-979-9534, or e-mail ba.tejada@gmail.com.
If you’re just looking for more verdant artistic inspiration, you will definitely find it at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. This weekend is the two-day International Orchid Festival, which means thousands of orchid plants will be set up for sale amidst the stunning ongoing Dale Chihuly exhibit. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. Admission is $20.
