Question: Why do liberal atheists, who wouldn’t walk into a Lutheran church on Sunday if you paid them, suddenly go all Christ-loving when a place such as the Knight Concert Hall hosts Gospel Sundays? Answer: It’s the music. The fact is some of the best pipes in the history of American music came out of the church: Mahalia Jackson, Bessie Griffin, Paul Robeson, Johnny Cash, and, yes, Whitney Houston (when she wasn’t doing blow with Bobby). The left might be biased against religion, but it’s equal opportunity when it comes to vocal styling. And who has more skills than seven-time Grammy winner CeCe Winans? Joining her onstage this Sunday at 4 p.m. will be the choir from the Cooper Temple Church of God in Christ, which is also debuting its new album, In the Upper Room. To round out the high-minded trifecta, there will be a screening of Sunday’s Best, a locally made film about Miami’s most famous church hats. Best of all, the concert is free.
