If you’ve never heard of PostSecret, you’re either an internet idiot, or you’ve been hiding in a cave for the past four years. Frank Warren’s community art project began innocuously enough — in 2004, he handed out blank postcards in the hopes that people would anonymously mail him their secrets. He’s since received more than 100,000 handmade postcards. Some are funny — like the Starbucks cup he recently received that declared, “I give decaf to rude customers.” The one that haunts Warren the most is a postcard of the World Trade Center. On it, the sender simply wrote: “Everyone who knew me before 9/11 believes I’m dead.”
Warren takes his role very seriously. “I think I’ve tapped into something mystical and wonderful that I don’t fully understand, and I want to do whatever I can to protect its integrity and purity,” he muses. This weekend Warren will host his first local PostSecret events, both of which will benefit CHARLEE Homes for Children. On Saturday, April 14, at 7:00 p.m., the opening for a special PostSecret exhibition will be held at the 4 Projects sales center (3814 NE Miami Ct., Miami). That exhibition will run until April 28. Tonight at 7:00 at ArtCenter/South Florida, Warren will read from his latest release — The Secret Lives of Men and Women. Admission to tonight’s reception is ten dollars.
