Bowlers and rhinos have a lot in common. Both are among the least respected of their kind. Bowlers are viewed as pseudo-sportsmen, more concerned with throwing back a few drinks à la “the Dude” in The Big Lebowski than perfecting their craft. Meanwhile, rhinos are known as the couch potatoes of the Serengeti. Oh, who are we kidding? Bowlers have nothing to do with rhinos, except this Friday, when the Bowling for Rhinos fundraiser takes place at Bird Bowl. There you can have some fun on the lanes while helping protect one of the planet’s endangered species. Believe it or not, the benefit is part of a national effort that’s been around for more than two decades. Zoo Miami is helping to sponsor this event, with all funds used to raise money and awareness for rhino conservation. Some dopes out there think the rhino horn — made of keratin — contains aphrodisiac properties when smoked or sipped in a tea-like beverage. So they go around decimating the population of rhinos just to get horny. At the fundraiser, participants can bowl two games (up to six people) and get pizza, soda, bowling shoes, a “Keep Rhinos Horny” drink Koozie, and a raffle ticket for prizes. Call 305-731-9874 or visit zoomiami.org.
