Miami’s late, great girl-punk act A.K.A. was much lamented when it went bust. But late last year, the act retooled with a slightly different lineup: Lori Garrote, Natalie Smallish, and Jordan Calloway. It also debuted an appropriately fresh name: the New. The name clearly signaled good things to come. Just a few months later, Ray Los of Long Island-based label Ocean Front Records heard the New on the radio, tracked it down, and scooped it up. Since then, the New has been continuing to build its buzz, perfecting its sugar-sweet punk pop that would make Joan Jett proud.
Now Ocean Front is planning another grand coming-out party of sorts for the band this Friday at Grand Central. The Girls Night Out Tour is all about the ladies of the New and their friends. Besides a headlining set by the stars of the evening, further entertainment will come courtesy of the Reckless Dames, a burlesque troupe that’s become a favorite of the downtown-kid club circuit. Between-set spins will be provided by DJs Aleks Violet, DJ Zehno, and, playing what’s billed as a special birthday set, Bonnie Beats, the local powerhouse behind Wynwood Radio and the blog Behind Color Bars.
Best yet, if you’re among the first 100 revelers to surf this estrogen wave after doors open, you’ll also score a free treat courtesy of 2 Girls and a Cupcake. These two Hialeah girls-made-good grabbed Best Cupcake honors in New Times’ recent “Best of Miami” issue.
