The waiter pours a swallow of Merlot into your glass and motions for you to sniff, swirl, taste, and approve the grape-licious concoction. You oblige, crumpling your wee nose in disgust as the juice hits your throat. Some people would say you’re a wine drinker who is savvier than most; your waiter would say you’re a freeloading jerk who’s using a customer courtesy to get drunk. Either way, you’re going to be a perfect judge for this weekend’s International Wine Challenge at Smith & Wollensky. The drink-off was previously off-limits to regular folks, but for $50 from 6 to 8:30 p.m., you’ll get to sample the goods from some of the world’s top wineries alongside 20 aficionados, all in the name of deciding which is best in show. You win prizes if your selections match the judges’, but when the drinks are flowing, how could you lose?

Last year, a 1995 Blanc de Millenaires from Reims, France, took top prize, but we think it might be that 2008 Irish Rose’s time to shine. Ticket sales will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami.
