To call Pilobolus a dance troupe is far too limiting — the members of this exhilarating and popular company are acrobats, dancers, and athletes who pull off feats of movement that border on the impossible. They mount each other and form pyramids and other physical structures, create spasms in their backs for special effects, and transform into robots or animals to tell the stories in their performances. The circus-like atmosphere and feel is intentional for this company, now in its 41st year, which takes pride in its humorous, hyperphysical, and playful ways.
In the past, Pilobolus has collaborated with luminaries such as Maurice Sendak and has been featured on the televised Academy Awards ceremonies. The company returns to the Ziff Ballet Opera House at the Adrienne Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. There will also be a modern dance master class Saturday featuring Pilobolus’s signature movements and gymnastics.
