The musical, cultural collective known as Monkey Village is a local treasure and a beautiful concept. The band plays together, some of the members have lived together, and they all unite in large, sprawling groups at cool venues like Transit Lounge. Watching the band fan out onstage makes you wonder, How many residents are there in this village, anyway? “Last year there were 54 different musicians in our circle. It’s just getting bigger; we just added a group from San Francisco,” says the enigmatic spokesperson who asked to be identified simply as The Monkey.

“The real secret of our organization is we have really strong bonds that we’ve been building for years.” For fans who are curious about the group’s origin and philosophy, tonight’s CD-release party and documentary screening should provide at least a few answers. But like this “band,” the film about them is anything but linear. “It’s kind of a … you have to see it. It’s like a photograph of a period in Miami history, and it really captures the scene and shows how rich and culturally diverse we are,” The Monkey pontificates. Ah. Experience it tonight at 9:00 at Transit Lounge, and enjoy a live show with an estimated twelve members of the collective.
