Miami’s real cultural diversity and voice are expressed through dance. The latest example — Cordel, from local troupe Brazz Dance -— takes the stage at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. Augusto Soledade, Brazz Dance’s Brazilian-born director and choreographer, has mixed tango, hip-hop, and a street-literature tradition from his homeland — the little cordel books sold by street vendors. All three of these forms were birthed at a ground level, in communities struggling to find places in the mainstream.
Created during a residency at the new South Dade center, with a group of dancers familiar with both contemporary trends and various Afro-Caribbean traditions, Cordel emerges as a distinctly Miami piece. The dance is set to music by Haitian-American Daniel Bernard Roumain.
