– He feels your pain (the IRS went after him in 1990 for $16.7 million in back taxes)
– He’ll end the “war on drugs” madness (he is co-chair of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws)
– He has a vision for rural America (see Farm Aid)
– He has a plan to combat global warming (he markets his own brand of bio-diesel fuel.
– He is socially progressive (listen to his recent song, Cowboys are Frequently, Secretly Fond of Each Other)
The red-headed stranger’s campaign… er… concert tour had him ambling into Miami Wednesday night.
Greybeards and potbellies were in profusion
at the performing arts center, as might be expected, but plenty of way-too-attractive girls in denim overalls and cowboy hats made things easier on the eyes. Love rained down on the 73-year-old troubadour, and he gave more than a little back, throwing his used bandanas into the crowd between renditions of classics like Nightlife, Always on My Mind and Pancho and Lefty.
Not too many surprises, except for a few new songs, one of which, Superman, started with the line “too many pills and too much pot.” But, then again, Willie doesn’t need to pull punches. He’s a legend, and it’s just good to know the outlaw who rode with the late Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings is still kicking.
After a rocking “On the Road Again,” Willie put down his beat up guitar to shake hands and sign cowboy hats. No babies to kiss, however. A few minutes later, he picked up his guitar again. “We’re not quite ready to leave. How ’bout y’all?” To wild cheering, he launched into “Pancho and Lefty.”
Now, that’s a president worth having.
