The Museum of Contemporary Art closes out the year with a night of jazz by moonlight. Tonight’s Jazz at MoCA artist is Brian Murphy, a master of the art of instinctive perfection, a style called spontaneous composition. About his love of this seat-of-the-pants style of jazz, Murphy says, “I like spontaneous improvisation with a trio or quartet, with people who are really listening and creating musical rapport in that moment … everyone on the same plane.”
A native of the home of the Mountie, he has sharpened his intuitive flair by recording and performing alongside jazz and blues geniuses like Wynton Marsalis, Albert Collins, Diana Krall, and Jimmy Witherspoon. Murphy’s distinctive gift has been praised by music lovers all over the world, and he has collaborated with Latin legend Tito Puente on a number of Grammy- and American Film Institute Award-winning albums.
