While we won’t tell a soul that you got that fabulous necklace at Claire’s for seven bucks, the tell-tale blush that rises in your cheeks when someone compliments you might give your shopping secret away. Here’s a tip from one fashionista to another. Making your own trinkets is the way to go. You’ll be beaming with pride instead of looking at your shoes when someone asks you where you got your cool new jewelry. “But I don’t know how to make my own necklaces,” you wail. To which we respond, put a cork in it and head to Beadfest Miami, the motherlode of jewelry-making basics. From Friday, May 4, through today, classes, lectures, and materials will be at your fingertips at the Sheraton Miami Mart.

“Once you learn the basic skills, you can make anything. We’ve got classes for each skill level,” gushes Leslie Rogalski, executive editor of Step by Step Beads. “The camaraderie is the best part. You take your class, then head off into the marketplace.” The expo grounds will be overflowing with imported glass, gemstones, tools, findings, and clasps. The event opens at 11:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. today. One day’s admission costs ten dollars, a three-day pass is $14.
