Kids, what do you do with a day off school? You sit around the living room playing video games or run around outside wreaking havoc in your hood. No! Take advantage of Florida’s beautiful fall weather and sign yourself up for the Cane Pole Fishing Contest at Bill Sadowski Park (1755 SW 79th Ave.). It’s easy. All you need to work is a pole, a string, and a hook. No troublesome reels or flyaway casts. Everything is supplied, equipment and worms, and if you’re a novice you’ll get plenty of help from the fish and game folks. But you may have to bring your own straw hat. The contest has been around since the early ’80s, but became official 12 years ago. Freshwater fishing means you’ll have the chance to reel in some peacock bass, largemouth bass, bluegills, the more exotic spotted tilapia, and naturally lots of sunfish. There’s a variety of prizes and other games to fill the day. Plus you can always get a preview of what you’re fishing for in the park’s new 880-gallon freshwater aquarium. And you can feed the critters, no hooks attached. The contest runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for kids ages 6 to 12; preregistration required. Call 305-255-4767 for info. — By John Anderson
