Twins may be your favorite sibling flick of all time, with Step Brothers trailing closely behind, but there’s a new, sincerer movie that just might push those two off the charts. Gabi on the Roof in July is the kind of authentic indie film we don’t see often enough on the big screen. The film is directed by and stars Lawrence Michael Levine as Sam, the older brother of Gabi, played by Levine’s real-life main squeeze, Sophia Takal. The precocious and genuine 20-year-old Gabi travels to New York to get some much-needed attention from her aloof older brother, who’s an artist in the big city. Takal says the motivation for this bro-sis relationship is that she has a lot of friends who’ve told her: “If my brother weren’t my brother, I’d marry him.” Levine and Takal take an honest approach to such a complex relationship and to a subculture of stalled but ambitious hipsters living in NYC. The mumblecore film screens at O Cinema beginning this Thursday.
