Attention, theater nerds: Get thee to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts to see the ultimate theater geekfest, Forbidden Broadway, in its inaugural South Florida run. In case you weren’t in high school drama club, Forbidden Broadway is a long-running New York musical revue that spoofs Broadway show tunes, often with politically incorrect lyrics. If Adam Sandler wrote a musical, this would be it.
Since satire is funnier if you know the original version, this edition of Forbidden Broadway features spoofs of shows that have either played already in South Florida or are coming this season, so expect parodies of shows like The Lion King, Wicked, and Les Misérables. But you don’t really need to see the originals; it’s not like these shows are crazy complicated. The Lion King? There’s a lion cub, and his father dies. Wicked? It’s about the Wicked Witch of the West, and she dies. Les Misérables? A bunch of French people, and everybody dies. There. Now that you’re up to speed, go hang out at the Arsht Center with all the other drama club people. (Note to aforementioned theater geeks: Yes, we know about Wicked, but do you want to ruin it for people who haven’t seen the show?).
