You like your rum with O.J. or muddled with lime and mint, but rum connoisseur Rob Burr says, “People who drink single malt scotch would never mix it with coke. We know that high quality liquors aren’t used to mix in cheap drinks.” So put down the Coco Loco and the Mai Tai mix and take your liq like a grownup. Asked his personal preference for rum-guzzling, without an ounce of snoot Burr said, “I often drink rum on the rocks.”
You, on the other hand, might need some hand-holding to ditch your fondness for the fruity concoctions. Tonight and each second Tuesday of the month at the Gifted Rums Tasting Events at Hoja Nueva Restaurant (180 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables) Burr willl be leading a tasting of the world’s finest rums. From 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. you’ll sample spirits that taste like butterscotch and cream soda. Yum. The cost is $15 when you RSVP online, or $20 at the door. – Raina McLeod
