There’s nothing like a sullen, perceptive 20-something artiste to puncture the veil of contentment for the average American husband and father. At least that’s the point of view proffered by Happy, a “rolling world-premiere” play by Idaho drama professor Robert Caisley. The main character, Alfred, has been married for 14 years, is gainfully employed, and is raising a special-needs, wheelchair-bound daughter. He’s loving life even with the curve balls it’s thrown him. But when a bohemian artist friend and his aforementioned sullen sculptor girlfriend invite Alfred and his wife for dinner, the ensuing conversation prompts him to reassess his marriage and the illusion of happiness. Debuting at New Theatre alongside other productions of the same play in New Jersey, Montana, and California, Happy has been heralded as a darkly comic and disturbing new work. New Theatre regulars, take note: Caisley’s last play, the romantic comedy Kissing, was a hit at the small theater a few years ago.
