Each year, hordes of sinners and saints flock to Brazil to boogie down in the streets during Carnaval, the Roman Catholic ritual marking the start of Lent. As a sort of farewell to the flesh, revelers don costumes, beat drums, and dance like crazy. But if this year’s Christmas bonus never came and your ’99 Toyota Camry won’t make it to Brazil, there are two local Carnaval celebrations that you won’t want to miss.
The Miami Art Museum’s (MAM) JAM at MAM offers an artsy happy hour on the third Thursday of every month. This month’s event, on February 15 from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m., will be like a night in Brazil, complete with the authentic samba of Grupo Embalo, a special performance by local capoeiristas, and fiery drum and dance routines. This trip to Brazil is free for MAM members, $10 for nonmembers and will take place in the museum at 101 Flagler Street in Miami. To RSVP call 305-375-1704. And starting tonight, SushiSamba Dromo (600 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach) will kick off a four-day gala of Rio-like carousing. The restaurant is unleashing a Brazilian-inspired menu, with special cocktails that’ll surely make you feel like the girl from Ipanema.
