In a city where revelers regularly debauch until 5 a.m., Sleepless Night is more than just an excuse to stay up all night. No, in this town, where folks often greet sunrise with another vodka Red Bull, the event stands out because it transforms Miami Beach into one giant 13-hour arts festival. Modeled off of Europe’s Nuit Blanche, the all-nighter features 150 local and international artists at more than 80 Miami Beach venues. It’s been held every other year since 2007.
Beginning with a 5:30 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Catalina Hotel & Beach Club on Saturday, Sleepless Night takes over four areas of Miami Beach: North Beach, Collins Park, Lincoln Road, and Ocean Drive and Washington Avenue. Free shuttles filled with video art will cart the sleepless among the zones. On Ocean Drive, Barcelona-based street-theater troupe Sarruga will present Fishes, in which giant guppies are powered by people. Brazilian artist Livio Tragtenberg will set up The Cabinet of Dr. Strange, an interactive performance piece involving a cage on Lincoln Road. Miami artists such as Pablo Cano will present a puppet play at the Colony Theatre, and dance-theater artist Octavio Campos will present his original work Please Don’t Hate Me. All events are free.
