“Hey Joe” is a dark ditty with deep, twisted roots. The version that most people know, in which Jimi Hendrix’s desperate screech builds to a crescendo before his wailing guitar takes over, is recognized by many as the definitive version. Hear the various recorded incarnations of this classic at Rat Bastard’s Epic Night, an evening where a diverse array of local musicians will reinterpret the standard. Even when pressed, event organizer Frank “Rat Bastard” Falestra finds it impossible to choose a favorite. “I like a lot of them. The Wilson Pickett version rocks! Then there’s the Leaves, the Byrds, Led Zeppelin, the Mothers of Invention, Pink Floyd … we’re gonna play a lot of those between sets,” says Rat Bastard, who will play a noisy version with his band, the Laundry Room Squelchers. Erica Sommer, the Curious Hair, Ha Ha Help, Yer Mother, and other local rockers will put their spin on the timeless tune tonight at Churchill’s. Call 305-757-1807, or visit www.churchillspub.com.
