While we’re still celebrating the death of Osama bin Laden as if it were a national holiday, we might want to think about how things were done back in the ’60s. In those days, people went around saying things like make love not war and groovy. Those against war staged love-ins where they’d play and listen to music, read poetry, and take part in peaceful demonstrations. In Miami, Greynolds Park was a favorite spot for these gatherings. Almost a half-century later, somebody had the good sense to revive these events. We sure could use the good vibes.
The eighth annual Greynolds Park Love-In takes place Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. If bloodlust recently got the best of you, make up for it by kicking back and chilling with family and friends. There’ll be a costume contest (break out the dusty tie-dyes or make them there), hula-hoop contests, classic cars, and ’60s-style vendors with food and drink. And if you still can’t feel the love, some old-school tunes should do the trick. Jefferson Starship, featuring members of the original Jefferson Airplane that opened at Woodstock, is the headliner. The group will play some of its best songs, including “Somebody to Love,” “Jane,” “White Rabbit,” and “Miracles.”
