Darryl Counts has been putting on The Show — An Old School Step Show for the past three years. But this year the event coordinator is particularly psyched. The performance fundraiser used to be held in a smaller venue, Florida Memorial University. “We sold out. We had to turn people away,” explains Counts. This year the performers will step at the BankUnited Center, which means a larger audience can watch the alumni members of the Miami-Dade National Pan-Hellenic Council show off their fly moves. Counts wants culture lovers to realize that the traditional dance historically displaying black college pride makes for a show worth seeing.
“I go to the ballet and Cirque du Soleil, and this is a different kind of performance that people can bring their families to,” says Counts. He promises this event will set itself apart from the rest of the step-show pack. “We have a full step show, and all the participants are graduate members. We had someone 60 years old once; he did a split,” recalls Counts.
