When he declared in 1963 he had a dream, America was captivated. As racially embroiled as the nation was, the dream of change resonated. Whether it was the Vietnam War or the civil rights movement, change was on the minds of many. Today, when speakers blare that gripping, sermonlike speech, a society still divided by war but a little less divided by culture (thanks to hip-hop and reality TV) can still relate. On the anniversary of his birthday, the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration is a way to honor the principles the civil rights leader lived and died for. For the past three years, the City of Miami Gardens has done just that at the Carol City Park Complex, hosting an event that attracts a rainbow of people via live entertainment, free arts and crafts, face painting, and games for the whole family. After the sun goes down on the celebration, flickering candlelight will illuminate the park during a memorial service for residents taken prematurely by gun violence.
