If you sometimes feel like a motherless child, try the following. This Friday, skip the after-work happy hour. Go home, make yourself a decent meal, then head over to the Knight Concert Hall for Sweet Honey in the Rock. If you know your Ketuvim, you’ll know that the name comes from the Psalms, but in this case, it refers to the Grammy award-winning a cappella ensemble, composed of a group of African-American women who sing like they sprung from the Psalms.
But if you had a bad run-in with “a cappella” during college, don’t worry. Sweet Honey in the Rock doesn’t do bubbly renditions of Hanson while wearing blue blazers and penny loafers. They will however mix in some Bob Marley, Negro spirituals, blues, and, for this concert, some holiday-themed material, and all of their renditions—originals and covers—cut right to the heart of the matter. This is music the way music began: as simple songs of praise by, for, and about human beings. Tickets start at $30. Bring the whole family.
